Book excerpt: National commentators and social researchers have made Spitzer's The Politics of Gun Control a standard source for understanding America's gun control debate. The book has been widely heralded for its wide-ranging and fair-minded coverage of the national gun culture, the history and meaning of the Second Amendment, the criminological consequences of guns, the interest groups involved, public opinion, and the policy making roles of Congress, the presidency, and the bureaucracy. In the final chapter Spitzer convincingly proposes an innovative framework based on international relations and arms control to suggest a new way to proceed toward political accommodation on the gun control issue.New to the third edition of The Politics of Gun Control is coverage of the proliferation of concealed-carry laws in cities and counties. The book covers the debate and data on the effect of these laws on crime rates, homicide rates, gun-related violence and accidental deaths. School violence-including the shooting at Columbine High and other schools around the country's also explored including: the congressional response in the aftermath of these episodes; the Senate's passing of a historic juvenile justice bill requiring background checks for gun show purchases; tougher penalties for sale to juveniles or to felons; mandatory gun locks on new handguns; and a ban on import of high-capacity ammunition clips. Also new to this edition are discussions of the liability lawsuits filed against gun manufacturers by cities and counties; NRA political funding of Republicans in the 2000 election campaign and lobbying successes with the Bush administration; new activism by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (formerly Handgun Control); the Million Mom March (May 2000); and the expiration of 5-day waiting period for gun purchases in 1998; and the FBI's new computerized background check system.

Book excerpt: Gum Nuts and Weeping Willows is a fictionalised story based on extraordinary true events, starting with the author’s great grandparents’ sea journey from London to Australia in the 1800s, and follows the life of the Jack family. Set against the tremendous opportunities opened up by the industrial revolution, with its new technologies and associated social changes, the book explores issues of poverty, workers’ conditions and the status of women. The story also delves into issues surrounding migration as the Jack family prepare to embrace a new culture and put down new roots, even if life doesn’t always go in their favour. A touching story in which the Jack family not only act against a historical back-drop, but are formed by it.

Book excerpt: On the fifth day of October 1934, I was born into a working-class family in a little country village in North Cork, Ireland. I can vividly remember the hardships and great fear during the war years, but we as a family were never hungry or cold. During my school days, I was maybe a little above average in most subjects, but writing was my favorite subject. As I grew older, neighbors or friends would sometimes ask me to write something for some occasion or others, such as a poem or a funny song or something. As time went on, I began to write stories, poems, and songs for my own enjoyment. By then I was into driving heavy machinery, and writing was a form of relaxation. But the noise from the machinery had a great effect on my hearing. As a result, I am now almost deaf. However, time must go on, and now that Im retired, I can spend more time at my writing. My wife is a keen gardener, and I sat outside the front door one sunny day, admiring her beautiful array of flowers. My gaze fell on a lovely little willow tree, which was now in full bloom. I decided to write a little story (magical of course) about this wonderful little tree. Hence I have this story the Weeping Willow. I hope you will enjoy it. Happy reading, and as we say in Ireland, Slainte.

Book excerpt: The author of 100 Flowers and How They Got Their Names now explores our deep-rooted relationship with trees in this beautifully illustrated book. In Lives of Trees, gardening author Diana Wells reminds us of just how innately bound we are to trees. For as long as humans walked the earth, we have depended on them for food, shade, shelter, and fuel—not to mention furniture, musical instruments, medicine, utensils, and more. Investigating the names and meanings of trees, Wells also uncovers their fascinating legends and lore: At one time, a worm found in a hazelnut meant ill fortune; Rowan trees were planted in churchyards to prevent the dead from rising from their graves; Greek arrows were soaked in deadly yew; and Shakespeare’s witches in Macbeth used “Gall of goat and slips of yew” to make their lethal brew. One bristlecone pine, at about forty-seven hundred years old, is thought to be the oldest living plant on earth. All this and more can be found in the beautifully illustrated pages (themselves born of birch bark!) of Lives of Trees.

Book excerpt: Vancouver is famous for its trees. The range of vegetation in this green city is extraordinary. Native and cultivated trees, many of which are not found anywhere else in Canada, thrive in the mild, wet winters and drier summers. Gerald Straley, a leading researcher and a popular science educator at the Botanical Garden at the University of British Columbia, knows Vancouver's woody, green heritage well. In this comprehensive guide, the first of its kind, he draws attention to the great diversity of trees in the city -- on its streets, in its parks, and in its public and private gardens. Trees of Vancouver is an invaluable guidebook for visitors and residents and an authoritative tool for horticulturists, landscape architects, naturalists, and the nursery industry. It provides detailed, easy-to-understand information on over 470 kinds of trees. Each entry contains particulars about the origins, general appearance, merits, problems, and uses in landscaping of individual species. To aid further in identification, entries specify locations where outstanding examples can be seen. The text is complemented by hundreds of the author's delicate drawings of the leaves, flowers, fruits, or other distinctive features of individual trees, and by colour plates of 86 trees. For the reader who wants to spend a pleasant day exploring and identifying specimens, there are detailed maps of several locations in the city where a wide variety of trees can be seen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accidental death of her father, a prominent citizen of Corona, leaves Victoria Moreno full of doubt, questions and anger. Suicide rumors heighten her grief. Why would her father, a devout Catholic kill himself? Was the death accidental? Struggling to cope with his actions, the 17-year old, finds solace in the inspiring and calming presence of Father John Collins rather than Ricardo, her betrothed childhood match. The bond between Victoria and Father John strengthens and evolves into a deep friendship riddled with confusion, complications, challenged beliefs and the discovery of a compelling, tender and sensual love that holds them captive and others in consternation. With mounting passion, they strive to reconcile the desires of the heart, mind and soul as they struggle with a culture defined by duty, tradition and religion, and a family saga steeped in secrets, guilt and greed. This is a strong, human story of a panorama of relationships of real people with hopes and fears that brings out the magic and beauty within us all besides the dark secrets that haunt us. Will their love prevail or will duty and reputation dictate its course? The intrigue entwines the relationship of an imperfect mankind to something higher, as it poses difficult questions, defies convention, and yet affirms age-old truths. Moving, original and provocative the tale turns and twists deepening our understanding of the vicissitudes of our humanity. Set in South Texas, in cinematic, vibrant and imaginative settings, the Texas/Hispanic culture gives the narrative its direction. Heartbreaking and soaringly uplifting, The Willows of Corona is told with candor, sensitivity and a perceptive observation as it treads delicately in one of the more complex paths of life.

This book is a mini encyclopedia of sorts-for not only trees, but also tree-related topics like reforestation, forest fires, emerald ash-borers, and more. Similar to Millman's Fungipedia, this book will include entries on both the commonplace and the whimsical alike, with line drawings throughout. The book has roughly 80 entries, in which readers will explore topics ranging from the vast Tongass forest in Alaska to the comparatively very small meristem cells, which allow trees to generate new growth. In addition to entries on the biological and ecological aspects of trees, the book also features more culturally focused entries, including those on historical figures such as renowned nature writer John Muir, and activist Wangari Maathai. Similar to Fungipedia, the book is intended for a general audience, however, it will also appeal to seasoned tree enthusiasts. Entries are supplemented with line drawings from Maren Westfall"--
