Book excerpt: It is meant literally! Join the group of five who get lost in a Warawiri, back-and-forth time travel journey into the Middle Age kingdom of Demak Jepara, in the island of Java in the sixteenth-century CE, and explore the amazing experiences of five hundred years ago in a mystical tropical kingdom. An East Timorese businessman, a Japanese stockbroker, a German music anthropologist, and a young Javanese executive lady are in the possession of heirlooms of the Middle Age Javanese kingdom, and they are transported by the mystical powers five centuries back because the heirlooms need to be spiritually cleansed. The president of the United States was also among the victims of the time travel into the past. And if you do not possess any ancient heirlooms, then just join the ninety-thousand spectator crowds on the soccer championship in the Jakarta Senayan gigantic stadium, who are also transported like a giant flying saucer five centuries into the past. The only way to rescue the victims back into the present is by holding a mystical ceremony from eight skyscrapers rooftops surrounding the stadium by eight spiritual masters forming the Mandala star configurations, playing the sacred Javanese gending symphony, the Harmony of Spirit in the Sky, led by their leader from the location of the lost stadium, using a slate board as his iPad. The events are all covered by Matra TV, a private TV broadcast company. A colorful laser light show in the sky from the skyscrapers rooftops, a rumor of an affair involving the president of the United States and the Javanese executive, and an exotic, mystical witchcraft ceremony and village life in remote jungle of Borneo add to your colorful journey into the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the issue of agency in relation to child marriage. In international campaigns against child marriage, there is a puzzle of agency: while international human rights institutions celebrate girls’ exercise of their agency not to marry, they do not recognize their agency to marry. Child marriage, usually defined as ‘any formal marriage or informal union where one or both of the parties are under 18 years of age’, is normally considered as forced – which is to say that it is assumed assuming that are not capable of consenting to marriage. This book, however, re-examines this assumption, through a detailed socio-legal examination of child marriage in Indonesia. Eliciting the multiple competing frameworks according to which child marriage takes place, the book considers the complex reasons why children marry. Structural explanations such as lack of opportunities and oppressive social structures are important, but not exhaustive explanations. Exploring the subjective reasons by listening to children’s perspectives, their stories show that many of them decide to marry for love, desire, to belong to the community, and for new opportunities and hopes. The book, then, demonstrates how the child marriage framework – and, indeed, the human rights framework in general – is constructed on too narrow a vision of human agency: one that cannot but fail to respect and promote the agency of all, regardless of gender, race, religion, and age. This book will be of interest to scholars, students, and practitioners in the areas of children’s rights, legal anthropology, and socio-legal studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do memories circulate transnationally and to what effect? How to understand the enduring role of national memories and their simultaneous reconfiguration under globalization? Challenging the methodological nationalism that has until recently dominated the study of memory and heritage, this book charts the rich production of memory across and beyond national borders. Arguing for the fruitfulness of a transnational as distinct from a global approach, it places the issues of circulation, articulation and the scales of remembrance at the centre of its inquiry. In the process, it sheds new light on the ways in which mediation, post-coloniality, migration and regional integration affect both the way we remember and the role of memory in contemporary societies. In this interdisciplinary collection, humanities and social science scholars examine a rich sample of cases from the nineteenth century on, stretching across the globe from Vietnam to Europe and the Middle East, to the USA and the Pacific, and involving a wide range of cultural practices from quilting to films, from photography to heritage sites and monuments. In the process, the volume develops a new theoretical framework while proposing new methodological tools and resources for studying collective remembrance beyond the nation-state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of independent cinema in Southeast Asia, following the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers there, is among the most significant recent developments in global cinema. The advent of affordable and easy access to digital technology has empowered startling new voices from a part of the world rarely heard or seen in international film circles. The appearance of fresh, sharply alternative, and often very personal voices has had a tremendous impact on local film production. This book documents these developments as a genuine outcome of the democratization and liberalization of film production. Contributions from respected scholars, interviews with filmmakers, personal accounts and primary sources by important directors and screenwriters collectively provide readers with a lively account of dynamic film developments in Southeast Asia. Interviewees include Lav Diaz, Amir Muhammad, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Eric Khoo, Nia Dinata and others. Tilman Baumgärtel taught film and media studies in Germany, Austria and the Philippines before joining Royal University of Phnom Penh in 2009. He has curated international film series and art exhibitions, and has also published books on independent cinema, Internet art, computer games and the German director Harun Farocki.
