Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and resistance in Iran; cowboy songs; fetal alcohol syndrome; the conquest of Everest; women settlers in Natal. What do these topics have in common? The study of what used to be called Commonwealth literature, or the new literatures, has by now come to be known as postcolonial study. This collection of essays investigates the status of postcolonial studies today. The contributors come from three generations: the pioneers who introduced study of the “new” literatures into university English departments, the next generation who refined and developed many of the theoretical positions embodied in postcolonial study, and the next, much younger, generation, who use the established practices of the discipline to investigate the application of this theory in a wide range of cultural contexts. Although the authors write from such different starting points, a surprisingly similar set of images, phrases and topics of concern emerge in their essays. They return constantly to issues of difference and similarity, the re-examination of categories that often appear to be too rigidly defined in current postcolonial practices, and to concepts of sharing: experience, ideas of home, and even the use of land. Postcolonizing the Commonwealth: Studies in Literature and Culture offers an intriguing analysis of the state of postcolonial criticism today and of the application of postcolonial methods to a variety of texts and historical events. It is an invaluable contribution to the current debate in both literary and cultural studies.

This book was released on 2009-04-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly interest in intertextuality remains as keen as ever. Armed with new questions, interpreters seek to understand better the function of older scripture in later scripture. The essays assembled in the present collection address these questions. These essays treat pre-Christian texts, as well as Christian texts, that make use of older sacred tradition. They analyze the respective uses of scripture in diverse Jewish and Christian traditions. Some of these studies are concerned with discreet bodies of writings, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, while others are concerned with versions of scriptures, such as the Hebrew or Old Greek, and text critical issues. Other studies are concerned with how scripture is interpreted as part of apocalyptic and eschatology. Early Christian Literature and Intertextuality includes essays that explore the use of Old Testament scripture in the Gospels and Acts. Other studies examine the apostle Paul's interpretation of scripture in his letters, while other studies look at non-Pauline writings and their utilization of scripture. Some of the studies in this collection show how older scripture clarifies important points of teaching or resolves social conflict. Law, conversion, anthropology, paradise, and Messianism are among the themes treated in these studies, themes rooted in important ways in older sacred tradition. The collection concludes with studies on two important Christian interpreters, Syriac-speaking Aphrahat in the east and Latin-speaking Augustine in the west. [Part of the LNTS sub series Studies in Scripture in Early Judaism and Christianity (SSEJC), volume 14]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lingener Studies of Management and Technology have mainly two objectives. First, there is the objective to stimulate and to support a critical and balanced integration of two different orientated disciplines of science. The second objective is to overcome the monistic approach of science and to promote a pluralistic and holistic approach. The holistic approach leads to an enlarged knowledge, bringing better decision advices of science for practice. This particular enlarged knowledge does not only give a better foundation to realize solution for the overcoming of crises, but it also can prevent crises in democratic economic systems. The sustainable market economy is based on the idea of the United Nations to install a worldwide sustainable development process. The objective of this process is to reduce the difference between "poor' and 'rich' countries. The concept of the sustainable market economy is founded on the basic idea of economics to realize market equilibria (Adam Smith). It is shown that economic equilibria also ensure economic sustainability. Because economic crises are present in economic disequilibria, the realization of the economic sustainability prevents systemic (self-made) economic crises and also ensures welfare, So it is logical to realize economic sustainability consequently, in spite of the dominance of political compromises in democratic societies.
