Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Modernist God State seeks to overturn the traditional secularization approach to intellectual and political history and to replace it with a fuller understanding of the religious basis of modernist political movements. Lackey demonstrates that Christianity, instead of fading after the Enlightenment, actually increased its power by becoming embedded within the concept of what was considered the legitimate nation state, thus determining the political agendas of prominent political leaders from King Leopold II to Hitler. Lackey first argues that novelists can represent intellectual and political history in a way that no other intellectual can. Specifically, they can picture a subconscious ideology, which often conflicts with consciously held systems of belief, short-circuiting straight into political action, an idea articulated by E.M. Forster. Second, in contrast to many literary scholars who discuss Hitler and the Nazis without studying and quoting their texts, Lackey draws his conclusions from close readings of their writings. In doing so, he shows that one cannot understand the Nazis without taking into account the specific version of Christianity underwriting their political agenda.

Book excerpt: Throughout the history of human intellectual endeavor, sovereignty has cut across the diverse realms of theology, political thought, and psychology. From earliest Christian worship to the revolutionary ideas of Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx, the debates about sovereignty -- complete independence and self-government -- have dominated our history. In this seminal work of political history and political theory, leading scholar and public intellectual Jean Bethke Elshtain examines the origins and meanings of &"sovereignty"; as it relates to all the ways we attempt to explain our world: God, state, and self. Examining the early modern ideas of God which formed the basis for the modern sovereign state, Elshtain carries her research from theology and philosophy into psychology, showing that political theories of state sovereignty fuel contemporary understandings of sovereignty of the self. As the basis of sovereign power shifts from God, to the state, to the self, Elshtain uncovers startling realities often hidden from view. Her thesis consists in nothing less than a thorough-going rethinking of our intellectual history through its keystone concept. The culmination of over thirty years of critically applauded work in feminism, international relations, political thought, and religion, Sovereignty opens new ground for our understanding of our own culture, its past, present, and future.

Book excerpt: This book explores the relations between Christianity and politics, examines the analogy between divine and civil government and considers what images of God may legitimately be employed by Christians in the twentieth century.'Religion and politics are necessarily related', declared Ronald Reagan, while addressing an ecumenical prayer breakfast of 17,000 people in Dallas. But how are they connected? Many popular images of God - King, Lord, and Judge - are essentially political, while concepts of might, majesty, dominion, and power are used of both God and the state. This ambitious and original work explores the relations between these images and their political context through the analogy between divine and civil government, and considers what images of God may legitimately be employed by Christians in the twentieth century. David Nicholls suggests that religious conceptions have often affected political thinking - theological rhetoric, child of political experience, may also be mother of political change.Drawing upon politics, theology, history, sociology, anthropology, and literary criticism, this important new book will be essential reading for all concerned with the relation between Christianity and politics.

Download Free God Is an Anarchist in PDF by Cam Rea Full eBook and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Chartier (author of Anarchy and Legal Order: Law and Politics for a Stateless Society) writes the foreword and states: “Anarchists frequently view religion as exemplifying or sustaining arbitrary authority. Consider Mikhail Bakunin's God and the State, suggesting that subservience to the state is disturbingly similar to religious belief, and Daniel Guerin's No Gods, No Masters, effectively treating religious and socio-political authority as coordinate. When religious institutions are intertwined with a society's power structure, just as when those institutions reinforce submissiveness to authority by denigrating or otherwise resisting critical thinking, it's easy to see why they might be seen as anarchism's enemies. But it is also surely crucial to recognize alternative strands in the history of multiple religious traditions. In the Abrahamic traditions, which I know best, it is clear, for instance, that belief in divine transcendence has undermined the idolization of political authority; that belief in individual access to God and to divine truth has strengthened belief in the capacity of ordinary people to make their own political decisions; and that Jesus' praise of peace has inspired rejection of state-made wars and the search for a truly consensual society. Religion and authoritarianism may sometimes be allies, but the story is too mixed to make it reasonable to insist that they have to be.Cam Rea's God is an Anarchist is an attempt to explore the anti-authoritarian side of Christianity. It is structured primarily as a reading of the Bible, with a focus on biblical passages that might be thought to lend support to the state's putative legitimacy, as well as on those that can be seen as counting against it.”

Its long and glorious history stretches back to the earliest days of Islam and it has always played a central, pivotal role in the life of the Muslim world. Led by the shaykhs of the Golden Chaininheritors of the secret knowledge of the prophets and saintsthe Naqshbandi Order survived the turmoil and tribulations of the past century and remains one of the few authentic mystical traditions that still maintains a living link with its ancient past. Now, for the first time, the history and teachings of the Naqshbandi Way are being made available to the public.Classical Islam and the Naqshbandi Sufi Tradition is the most detailed and authentic book ever written about a Sufi order in English. Providing a comprehensive history of the Naqshbandi Tradition, the author Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani, one of the most respected teachers of Islamic spirituality in the world today, traces the lives of its foremost teachers from Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be peace, to the present. Their life stories are intimately woven with landmark events of history, from the time of the Companions to the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the reemergence of Islam in the former Soviet Union. However, this book also contains much more. It details the fundamental principles of the Sufi path and the primary teachings of the Naqshbandi Order, exploring the doctrines and philosophy behind this important current in spiritual thinking.
