Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled in the northernmost section of the Adirondack Mountains, the communities of Keeseville, Port Kent, Ausable Chasm, Clintonville, Harkness, Port Douglas, Ausable, and Chesterfield provided early settlers of the 1800s with a wealth of natural resources in wood, iron, and stone. The Ausable Chasm and Ausable River provided the natural power to refine the materials on-site, while the nearby Lake Champlain provided the transportation to the rest of the world. For early America, this was a booming community that rapidly grew from the 1850s until the 1920s, when modernized transportation and factories around the country made the fairly isolated area less cost-effective. Today, Keeseville is a quiet stop on the Northway that connects New York City and Albany to Montreal. Impressive bridges, closed factories, and some old grand architecture are remnants of the glory days of the once-booming community.

Book excerpt: Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, originally platted as the village of "Rochester," took shape in the late 1830s and 1840s. Settled by Yankee businessmen from the East, "Sheboygan at the Falls" was strong from the beginning, surviving even the national financial panic of 1837. As the village grew up along the Sheboygan River, this reliable source of water ensured rapid growth of industry and population and the accompanying prosperity. A city of Greek Revival and Cream City brick architecture, Sheboygan Falls boasts two districts listed on the National Historic Register. The Cole Historic District is the largest Greek Revival District west of the East Coast. Its five buildings were built between 1837 and 1846. The largely original downtown business district of the city includes buildings that once housed a tannery, a cheese bandage factory, a rake factory, a woolen mill, a Temperance Hall for teetotalers, and a Free Hall for women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable number of Greek myths concern the plight of virgins – slaughtered, sacrificed, hanged, transformed into birds, cows, dear, bears, trees, and punished in Hades. Death and the Maiden, first published in 1989, contextualises this mythology in terms of geography, history and culture, and offers a comprehensive theory firmly grounded in an ubiquitous ritual: pubescent girls’ rites of passage. By means of comparative anthropology, it is argued that many local ceremonies are echoed throughout the whole range of myths, both famous and obscure. Further, Professor Dowden examines boys’ rites, as well as the renewal of entire communities at regular intervals. The first full-length work in English devoted to passage-rites in Greek myth, Death and the Maiden is an important contribution to the exciting developments in the study of the interrelation between myth and ritual: from it an innovative view on the origination of many Greek myths emerges.

Download Free Romance for Sale in Early Modern England in PDF by Steve Mentz Full eBook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major claim made by this study is that early modern English prose fiction self-consciously invented a new form of literary culture in which professional writers created books to be printed and sold to anonymous readers. It further claims that this period's narrative innovations emerged not solely from changes in early modern culture like print and the book market, but also from the rediscovery of a forgotten late classical text from North Africa, Heliodorus's Aethiopian History. In making these claims, Steve Mentz provides a comprehensive historicist and formalist account of prose romance, the most important genre of Elizabethan fiction. He explores how authors and publishers of prose fiction in late sixteenth-century England produced books that combined traditional narrative forms with a dynamic new understanding of the relationship between text and audience. Though prose fiction would not dominate English literary culture until the eighteenth century, Mentz demonstrates that the form began to invent itself as a distinct literary kind in England nearly two centuries earlier. Examining the divergent but interlocking careers of Robert Greene, Sir Philip Sidney, Thomas Lodge, and Thomas Nashe, Mentz traces how through differing commitments to print culture and their respective engagements with Heliodoran romance, these authors helped make the genre of prose fiction culturally and economically viable in England. Mentz explores how the advent of print and the book market changed literary discourse, influencing new conceptions of what he calls 'middlebrow' narrative and new habits of reading and writing. This study draws together three important strains of current scholarly inquiry: the history of the book and print culture, the study of popular fiction, and the re-examination of genre and influence. It also connects early modern fiction with longer histories of prose fiction and the rise of the modern novel.

Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller "Timeless and vast... The raw beauty of Ms. Groff’s prose is one of the best things about Arcadia. But it is by no means this book’s only kind of splendor." --Janet Maslin, The New York Times "Even the most incidental details vibrate with life ï¿1⁄2 Arcadia wends a harrowing path back to a fragile, lovely place you can believe in." --Ron Charles, The Washington Post In the fields of western New York State in the 1970s, a few dozen idealists set out to live off the land, founding a commune centered on the grounds of a decaying mansion called Arcadia House. Arcadia follows this romantic utopian dream from its hopeful start through its heyday. Arcadia’s inhabitants include Handy, the charismatic leader; his wife, Astrid, a midwife; Abe, a master carpenter; Hannah, a baker and historian; and Abe and Hannah’s only child, Bit. While Arcadia rises and falls, Bit, too, ages and changes. He falls in love with Helle, Handy’s lovely, troubled daughter. And eventually he must face the world beyond Arcadia. In Arcadia, Groff displays her literary gifts to stunning effect. Book excerpt: The city of Constantinople was named New Rome or Second Rome very soon after its foundation in AD 324; over the next two hundred years it replaced the original Rome as the greatest city of the Mediterranean. In this unified essay collection, prominent international scholars examine the changing roles and perceptions of Rome and Constantinople in Late Antiquity from a range of different disciplines and scholarly perspectives. The seventeen chapters cover both the comparative development and the shifting status of the two cities. Developments in politics and urbanism are considered, along with the cities' changing relationships with imperial power, the church, and each other, and their evolving representations in both texts and images. These studies present important revisionist arguments and new interpretations of significant texts and events. This comparative perspective allows the neglected subject of the relationship between the two Romes to come into focus while avoiding the teleological distortions common in much past scholarship. An introductory section sets the cities, and their comparative development, in context. Part Two looks at topography, and includes the first English translation of the Notitia of Constantinople. The following section deals with politics proper, considering the role of emperors in the two Romes and how rulers interacted with their cities. Part Four then considers the cities through the prism of literature, in particular through the distinctively late antique genre of panegyric. The fifth group of essays considers a crucial aspect shared by the two cities: their role as Christian capitals. Lastly, a provocative epilogue looks at the enduring Roman identity of the post-Heraclian Byzantine state. Thus, Two Romes not only illuminates the study of both cities but also enriches our understanding of the late Roman world in its entirety.
